Her current role as a clinical supervisor for Manchester University BSc Hygiene and Therapy undergraduates involves teaching implant assessment and management.

Jenny Walker is a dental therapist who qualified from Leeds Dental Institute in 2015. She works in both NHS and private practice and for past 7 years has worked in a peri-implant disease referral practice in the North West. She took part in the innovative research pilot by Bangor University on the utilisation of dental therapists in the UK health care system. Jenny is one of the past BSP early career group representatives for hygienists and therapists (2019-2020).

Together Jenny and Kathryn lecture for the MSc in Dental Implantology and they are both educators for NSK Ikigai. They have presented nationally on the subjects of implant subject care and periodontitis whilst also publishing various journal articles. Working together they have successfully devised and for the last 5 years delivered a 2-day course for hygienists and therapists on implant management.

Jenny was involved in the BSP workshops for the periodontitis S3 guidelines stages I-III and they both took part in the latest workshops focusing on stage IV periodontal management and S3 guidelines for peri-implant disease and management.

Self Employed Specialist Radiographer

Barbara Lamb qualified as a general radiographer in 1974 and, since then, has worked exclusively as a specialised radiographer in the dental field. From 1974 to 1979 Barbara was employed in Glasgow Dental Hospital as a radiographer. She then worked as a single handed radiographer in dental practice from 1982 to 1998 as well as providing radiography support to a number of dental research projects before returning to work at Glasgow Dental Hospital from 1998 to 2008.

Since becoming self-employed in 2008, Barbara has specialised in delivering CPD on all aspects of IRMER, travelling all over the UK giving practical based workshops and lectures as well as delivering courses which qualify dental nurses to take radiographs. Barbara also provides dental team “in practice training” and IRMER courses which allows the sessions to be tailored to the specific circumstances of individual practices. All courses are tailored to the needs of dentists, dental hygienists, therapists, and dental nurses working in general dental practice, community dental services and hospital dentistry settings. Barbara has presented the undergraduate dental radiography component of the BSc Oral Health Sciences in Edinburgh for many years and continues to present the dental radiography component of the BSc undergraduate course of the Highlands and Islands in Oral Health Sciences.

This webinar will simplify and clarify what is needed to be incorporated in a dental practice or community dental service in relation to technique and documentation of radiographs.

Learning Aim

The aim of the course is to comply with GDC requirements and provide recommended CPD for the participants. This is a practical approach to technique and quality assurance in dental radiography.

  • Aware of some of their responsibilities under current IRMER legislation with clarification of the regulations as they relate to dental practice and community dental services

Pat Popat is a Dental Therapist working in Specialist referral and general dental practices. He started his career as a Dental Nurse, becoming Course Director & Lead Tutor for Dental Nurse Training at Ipswich Hospital, and is an Examiner for the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses. Pat also works with Dentaid in Uganda providing pain relief clinics within a team of medical and dental professionals.

Siobhan Kelleher is a multi-award-winning dental hygienist and is the clinical and programme lead for the Ikigai Oral Hygiene Programme. She is an accredited Eduqual course provider and created the Postgraduate Diploma in Oral and Positive Health – level 7, the first globally. As well as her many academic qualifications Siobhan is an opinion leader and clinical support specialist with a number of leading dental companies and will moderate our Hygienists’ Forum with knowledge, expertise and a professional guiding hand.

Kathryn graduated from Leeds Dental Institute in 1993 and soon after returned there to take a teaching post, completing the Further Adult Education Teaching Certificate. She has worked for the last 30 years in various dental settings and currently works in private practice and is a clinical supervisor running an implant maintenance clinic for the Manchester University BSc in Oral Health Sciences undergraduate students at ICE postgraduate Dental Institute and Hospital. Kathryn was included in one of the S3 clinical practice guidelines Stage IV working groups, held by the British Society of Periodontal.

She also works alongside both specialist and general dentists. Helen’s interests are dental Implants and also Periodontal disease and its treatment especially through a team approach.

Helen is a Past President of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) and a volunteer Coach and Mentor for BSDHT’s coaching and mentoring programme.

Lisa has over 23 years of experience in dentistry, starting as a dental nurse in a multi-disciplinary practice and completing the part-time dental nursing course.

Qualifying in dental hygiene in 2007 from DDUH, Lisa then spent her time between private practice work in multidisciplinary specialist practices and Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin. Emma has many years’ experience in dental nursing and oral health care, having qualified from Manchester Dental School. She was at one point the only Sponsored McMillian Oral Health practitioner working for the Pennine Trust and supported patients at all stages of their treatment of oral cancers. Emma led nurse led clinics and was the DCP member of UKOMIC. Her work has seen her present and write both nationally and internationally and allowed her to present at the Mouth Cancer Awareness event in Parliament. Emma is also a clinical advisor for MCF. She has throughout the pandemic worked closely with care homes and was proud to contribute to the COP26 event which put oral care for the older person under the spot light.

Oral Care is important at any age, but as 78% of mouth cancers cases are in the over 55 age group, it is important that care home residents look after their mouths and staff check their mouths on a regular basis looking for signs and symptoms of mouth cancer. This presentation will look at the challenges around detection in this group and tips on how to spot the symptoms.

Periodontitis and Diabetes – Collaborative care and integrated care pathways

Dr Varkha Rattu qualified from Queen Mary, University of London, in 2018. Following graduation, she undertook posts in general practice and hospital where her passion for gold standard dentistry was reflected by the numerous accolades she won.

Dr Rattu is now on the four-year periodontology postgraduate programme at King’s College London, Guy’s Hospital, London. Here she manages complex periodontal patients non-surgically and surgically. She has an active role in periodontal research which she thoroughly enjoys. This has resulted in her publishing articles in and being invited as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, she has been invited to lecture internationally on periodontitis and the systemic axis. More recently, Dr Rattu was the recipient of the prestigious British Society of Periodontology Systematic Review Prize for her high-quality research where she collaborated with some of the World’s leading periodontists.

Description

Passionate about the effects of periodontitis on systemic health, Dr Rattu launched a ‘Periodontitis and Diabetes’ campaign within hospital. It was recognised nationally winning the BSP Audit Award and has since been supported by TePe. Furthermore, she has introduced diabetes point-of-care testing within her periodontal consultations in private practice.

Dr Rattu discusses the importance of collaborative care when managing patients with co-morbid periodontitis and diabetes.

  • Heighten awareness of the biological mechanisms linking periodontitis and diabetes
  • Discuss the evidence base supporting the management of periodontitis on diabetes and vice versa
  • To encourage dental professionals to think laterally and consider an expansion of their traditional role when managing patients with periodontitis

After qualifying from The Eastman Dental Hospital, UCL, in 2002, Louisa has enjoyed the last twenty years working clinically as a dental hygienist with extended duties, mainly in London. During this time, she continued to stay abreast of new developments in the dental field, and returned to further study, being awarded BSc Dental Studies in 2019.
This led to her decision to take a career sidestep from clinical work, to focus on scientific research and dental product development, and was recently awarded her MSc in Oral Biology with distinction from QMUL.

Louisa has a particular interest in minimally invasive dentistry and biomimetic preservation of the oral tissues. She is presently working clinically one day a week to retain her clinical skills alongside her role as Territory Manager and UK course lead for a large global dental manufacturer.

Louisa is an Associate Fellow at The College of General Dentistry and holds the role of Chair for the South East Regional Group of the BSDHT.

The webinar explores the use of biomimetic toothpastes in the prevention of demineralisation, dental caries and dentinal hypersensitivity.

Learning Aims and Objectives

To gain a greater understanding of the dental hard tissues at nanoscale, how they are protected naturally in the oral environment to prevent caries, erosion and dentinal hypersensitivity, and how we can prevent and restore loss of tissue and function using biomimetic, bioactive pastes, especially those containing calcium phospho-silicate.

  • Discuss the nanocomposite nature of the dental hard tissues and how this relates to biomimetics
  • Discuss the importance of the Acquired Enamel Pellicle (AEP), how it is developed and its role in the prevention of the dental hard tissues
  • Investigate the use of alternative pastes containing Calcium and Phosphate, with or without Fluoride, in the remineralisation process, and their mode of action on the dental hard tissues

Ru opened her own skin and aesthetics clinic in 2020 and this year she has set up her own training academy with Lauri Wood. Her dream is to gain VCTC status and train up to level 7.
