Dr Amit Mistry - Dental Implant Surgeon

On the road again with Amit Mistry

Despite the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to the dental profession over the past year, as an experienced peripatetic implant surgeon I’m able to once again offer my professional implant services to practices across the northwest of England and beyond.

My day-to-day work involves offering a highly reliable service for all types of implant cases, from the most straightforward to the most complex. For referring dentists who are confident in completing restorations, I’m happy to provide surgical-only placements. With my experience in maxillofacial surgery I also work alongside implant dentists undertaking more advanced procedures including multiple implants, full arch immediate load cases and zygomatic implants as well as block bone and tissue grafting and sinus lifts.

Working in many different surgeries, I have to be prepared to use any leading implant system based on the clinician’s preferences and the case in hand. And it goes without saying that with the amount of travelling and volume of work that I do, I must have equipment that I can rely on day in, day out and know that I can just ‘plug and play’ without any worries that any part of my kit is going to let me down.

Reliability as standard

When it comes to implant placement, my NSK Surgic Pro surgical implant unit is as reliable as ever, an essential piece of equipment that I’ve always used and is easy to carry around with me on my travels. Because I use a wide range of implant systems I can programme the Surgic Pro accordingly, such as drill sequences for Nobel Biocare implants or Southern zygomatic implants. On average I carry out between 3 – 6 surgeries a day and this allows me to get on with my work immediately with no time wasted and I know the unit is set for exactly the right protocol for the job in hand.

I’m so reliant on my Surgic Pro and work it so hard that I carry a second one for back-up. However, the unit is so reliable and with regular servicing and maintenance it has never let me down – it just works every time.

What I also really like about the Surgic Pro is that I can check the calibration of my handpieces on a routine basis so I know the precision is there for any implant procedure.  Calibration is key, especially for immediate loading, and this gives me the reassurance that the implant or restorative components are always placed and tightened correctly.

Surgical handpieces

I work with a range of surgical straight handpieces as well as the NSK Ti-Max X-SG20L  implant contra-angle (20:1) which always proves to be extremely reliable. For zygomatic implants I use the specialised NSK 20:1 Zygomatic handpiece SGX-E20R which is now available for the UK market. Thanks to the handpiece being very light and sleek it’s extremely useful in the surgical setting and its unique angulated shape gives easy access to the surgical site. I often use it to place anterior and pterygoid implants as it gives me straight direct access to exactly where I want the implant to be placed.

Less is more

VarioSurg 3Another key piece of equipment that always travels with me is my NSK VarioSurg3 ultrasonic bone surgery system which can be linked directly to the Surgic Pro as required. Because both compact units can be neatly stacked together and controlled by just one foot pedal, it means there’s no unnecessary pieces of kit lying around taking up valuable space during surgery.

The VarioSurg is ideal for minimal intervention during block graft procedures instead of using a drill where there can be a lot of wasted bone to harvest just a small amount. With the VarioSurg’s comprehensive range of angled tips you can literally draw out precisely the shape of bone you want for the surgical site with minimal waste.

Gold standard service

I travel between practices  and carry out up to six back-to-back surgeries a day, I have to be certain my equipment never lets me down. For total peace of mind I’ve taken out NSK’s premium-level Gold service contract to ensure reliability as well as knowing that when any piece of equipment goes in for servicing or repair, NSK will replace it like-for-like in the interim so there’s never any downtime. The contract also provides evidence that my equipment is regularly serviced and maintained to comply with HTM 01-05 and CQC inspection standards.

A better future

The past year has been a very different experience for me, especially in the surgical environment with minimally invasive techniques, reducing aerosol generation and infection control all top of the agenda.

In times like these you need extra help and support to get your job done to the best of your ability, and that’s exactly what I get from the team at NSK. Their customer support is excellent and the engineering standard of the surgical equipment I rely on is first-class. This allows me to work more efficiently with minimal stress as hopefully, together with my work colleagues, we can look forward to a brighter time ahead.
